How many times have you been told by a colleague, “you represent that group”? I have encountered that line numerous times over my many years of association management. I made a living for over 25 years serving many professions that were not main stream or what one would call the elite in the health care or insurance industry.
My experiences for whatever reason placed me in front of associations, societies, organizations where they lacked funding resources to adequately support staff compliments and provide for the necessary tools to make the task of marketing their industry easy!
Early on I realized that their money is the same currency as other top notch agencies I could have worked for. Only difference they did not have as much. What began as one client would eventually turn into many clients in that the niche market I was making for my services was in the allied health care industry. The Allied Care Industry is simple those health care providers not considered main stream health care according of course to only “main stream” health care providers.
My experience would allow me to learn so much about the allied health care industry that I became an expert in many professions. I became so engrossed in my service that I was called by title of the profession I was representing. I was addressed as Doctor, Lawyer, Professor, Podiatrist, Chiropractor, Public Insurance Adjuster, Lobbyist, Executive Director, Executive VP, President, CEO, Consultant, Marketing Analyst, Negotiator, and Legislator. Okay, you get the point, I have been many things to many people but I always remained “Who I Was”!
The key here is to never become what it is you do but be who you are and allow your professional expertise and dynamic personality to do the rest. Most successful administrators/managers do one thing with ease; they Communicate Effectively and with Sincerity and Honesty. If you are true to your skill sets and believe in yourself with a degree of self-confidence you can do pretty much anything you want to do in life.
My mother Louise, would always tell me, “son there is nothing you cannot do”, I grew up believing in that statement and to this day I marvel at my accomplishments and success – you see without the belief I am who I am I doubt I would have been able to have the confidence to do what I did in life and I am still moving forward looking for new challenges on the horizon. Maybe someday soon I will earn a new title but for now I am who I am and I am proud of that!
In 2003, Mr. Veno was recognized and awarded Teacher of the Year for his role in leading his graduate class students in helping a local business revamp their business plan. Most recently Mr. Veno was voted the “Person of the Year” by Dynamic Chiropractic, a national Chiropractic publication that recognizes individuals who provide outstanding service to the profession. Veno is also the recipient of the ACA Legal Service Award and many other state national awards being recognized for his support of the Chiropractic profession.

With all the whitewater activity at ASCI, in McHenry, MD, why only one ACA certified instructor there?
He’s listed on the last page. He’s only certified in whitewater rafting.
Nobody else, in McHenry, MD, is listed with any other certifications.

I mean, there must obviously be people there more than able to teach whitewater kayaking and swiftwater safety & rescue, no?
Do they not certify themselves just because they don’t need to? It cost money? What do you think?
You’re right, awaywa. I contacted the ACA. They are still putting together the list I’m looking for. They are also working on a new website, which will make things easier to find.
I became an American Canoe Association Certified instructor in both canoe and kayak, but have let it lapse. The course was great, but since I can teach canoeing without paying the ACA yearly dues, I have not maintained it over time. I imagine there are many people in the area you have indicated who are the same. Just because there is only one person in that area currently certified as an instructor by the ACA does not mean there are not more people in the area capable of teaching.
Update: The below post makes a very good point about your link. However, I’lll disagree on the points about insurance and employment. When someone sues, it is usually the business they sue and even if it’s not, the business is usually responsible under the respondent superior doctrine. There fore it is the Business that needs insurance, not the individual instructor. Also, there are many boating jobs that do not require ACA certification. I once worked at a canoe camp that had dozens of employees, none of which were ACA instructors. Just this year, I myself hired 10 leaders to lead some expedition canoe trips and none of them were ACA certified instructors.
