Why Carbon diodes don’t exist?
I was thinking what if Intrinsic Si semi-conductors had catenation property… they might have had lesser band energy gap and so on… So, is it true that Carbon diodes don’t exist? Why won’t that work? Can we dope Si with C instead of those 13 and 15 group elements?
Carbon was never considered for this role where conductivity is extremely important and hence the use of metals. Carbon is a tetravalent and intrinsic semiconductor. It could have replaced Si if only it had some more conductivity. Also the intrinsic Carbon (more elctronegative) can’t be doped unlike Silicon.
Dioping implies injecting another element with a different valency from Si which is a tetra (4) valent to increase the conductivity supplied by te extra electrons or lack (hole) of it. Boron and Aluminium with valence 3 and Phosphorus with valence 5 are used to dope portions of Si. The other portions not to be doped are rpotected by giving an oxidising coating that is etched away later by dissolving in HF (HydroFluoric Acid).
