Berkenstocks is a famous German Brand for sandals and shoes, manufacturing contoured cork and rubber foot beds for their shoes. Berkenstocks was started by Johann Adam Birkenstock in 1774 and was registered as “subject and shoemaker” under the local church. It was in fact the grandson of Johann that brought in a new wave in 1897 with the introduction of contoured insole that could be used in the making of its custom foot wares. Later in 1902 he developed the first arch support for shoe which was flexible enough and could be incorporated in factory made shoes. 1964 saw a new version for this feature and became what today is rightly called the Berkenstocks sandals.
American Margot Fraser in 1967 discovered these shoes while on a vacation to Germany and witnessed a relief from her foot ailment by wearing these shoes. Her Enthusiasm made her start this sandal trading company named Birkenstock Footprint Sandals, Inc. in California. In 2005 this company was renamed to Birkenstock Distribution USA, Inc, and became the largest importer and distributor in the United States.
These foot wears are very famous among people who have to work on their feet all day long, like a job of a nurse. The footwear gives utmost comfort and causes less stress to the feet. These sandals were initially used only as a home slipper in Germany, but today even in the United States, it is worn by all at every occasion. Even the entertainment industry has embraced this fashion, and today we see a lot of celebrities walking in them.
The variants of this shoe are the two strapped sandals and the clogs. The clogs are worn in the winters and the sandals are preferred during the summers. Some of the other brands registered under the Berkenstocks are Tatami, Betula, Birki’s, Papillio, and Footprints.
