Best mobile external harddrive cross platform Mac OSX and Windows?
Hi there,
I hope you can help. What would you recommend as the best portab;e harddrive to use cross PC and Mac? I have looked at Iomega, G-Store, Seagate, LaCie and others. Please recommend.

Hey there,
Those are decent choices. I have to use a Hard drive between iMac, Dell Xps720 (windows 7 based) and be able to drop files off at a breeze if Im at anyother windows related desktop. I have used Iomega, Apple’s G and Seagate. The problems with them are, that they are inconsistant. Meaning that, they dont preform the same when changing operating systems or computers. Mostly due to built in firmware that rathers a windows operating system than a mac or vice versa.
Without going into the hardware and why that is, you want a Western Digital My Book. Ive included a link below. They work on the physical level, that basically means it runs USB native, and not software driven to preform better in one op and not the other. The hard drive will run the same in both operating systems. Lots of hard drive manufactors cut the costs by just implentmenting a software side reader, instead of the physical USB 2.0 that reads.
So hope that made sense.
Another note,
Iomega and Seagate I wouldnt get for the very reason, when Ive handled a few of them for customers, where they have gone bad. (And theres any reason why a hard drive could go bad, its not a bad company), but its the way they are mounted inside the case. eternal hard drives (portable), usually come with an outer casing and are mounted inside. Iomega, is in pretty sloppy, theres two screws holding it vertically, and seagates is the same. Youll be moving these drives a lot and you need it to be stable.
Think of Iomega and seagate as a diving board in a box. The hard drive is sitting with room above and below to move around. Which isnt good, you can physically damage the heads.
