The cut of a diamond refers to the way the stone is shaped and polished, how deep or shallow is the diamond cut and how the facets are arranged. There are various cuts of diamonds, with many of them patented. Even for diamonds that are of the same shape, they can vary vastly in how the facet are cut and arranged. One example is the Asscher and Princess diamonds, both are square-shaped diamonds with different facet arrangements.
How the crystal molecules of the diamond are arranged will determine the shape and cutting of the diamond. If the molecules are arranged in an octahedron fashion, it will be cut as a round brilliant. Often, two round brilliants can be cut from the same original crystal. If the crystal molecules are arranged in a macer configuration, the diamond is cut as marquise or oval diamond.
There are many different types of diamond cuttings. An emerald shaped diamond is a rectangle cut with longer, flat facets. If the diamond is not clear enough, an emerald cutting can cause the diamond to appear cloudy. In comparing to the emerald cutting, another similar diamond is the Asscher diamond. It is a square cutting and resembles a spider web when viewed from above.
Other diamond shapes like the pear-shaped or tear-shaped is self-explanatory. This diamond is a perfect oval that’s wider at one end and curves to a point at the other end. Another different cutting is the marquise-shaped diamond, which can maximize the carat weight of a stone with its longer and flatter cut, yet the diamond is highly faceted. The marquise diamond comes in a variety of length-to-width ratios.
Many diamonds, including square and emerald cut diamonds, will have rounded or cut-off corners, because contrary to popular belief, a diamond can chip or scratch if it knocks against something at the wrong angle. The modern round cut brilliant stone has 58 facets, or 57 if the tiny bottom facet, the culet, is omitted. A unique exception is the Princess cut, which is a square diamond with pointed corners.

How much approximately does my loose diamond weigh in carats?
I have a loose marquise shaped diamond. Id like to buy a setting for it online but cant seem to figure out on my own what my carat weight is. What I do have are my dimensions! They are as follows:
It is 7 mm length, 4 mm width and when it lays on the side it is also 4 mm. Is anyone out there knowledgeable enough to give me a very close estimate on the carat weight? Its a beautiful diamond and I cant wait to get it set! Thanks in advance to anyone who answers!!!!!
this is a disaster waiting to happen, take it to a jeweler, ordering a setting online and not having it professionally sized is like buying a shoe for a kid you never met, it’s not gonna fit right.
