I am looking for a diamond and I found this on a diamond website. Is this a good diamond?

I am wondering which diamond to buy for an engagement ring. I didn’t feel like spending a lot of money at Kay’s for something I can get at an online diamond retailer for 2/3 the cost. Can you please tell me if these diamonds are good. I need to know which one to choose.

I plugged the statistics for each diamond into a diamond search engine (http://www.diamondpriceguru.com/), to check the prices.

The top diamond (1.03, H, VS2, Ideal/ Excellent EGL) had 29 matches, and the best price was $2,889. Also, I found the exact diamond (same measurements and everything) at Abazias for $2,903.36. (Diamonds are frequently listed at several retailers–they don’t actually “hold” the physical inventory.) Abazias charges an extra 2.3% if you use a credit card, so keep that in mind when comparing prices.

The second diamond (1.02, I,VVS2, Very Good EGL) had 11 matches, and the best price was $2,613.50. Three other diamonds in this category cost less than your exact match. And since the diamond you are looking at appears to have a thin girdle (TN), I’d recommend going with one of the slightly less expensive ones that lists a medium (MED) girdle–and one of those even had a better polish grade.

Is this a good time to point out that aiming for a .99-carat diamond will put it in a different carat weight bracket and could help lower the cost at most retailers?

Regardless, what you really seem to want is a 1.02-1.03-carat princess cut diamond with at least VS2 and color I or better, “very good” cut grade or better, all for $3,300 or less. So, I tried asking the search engine for that and found 89 matches.

I recommend narrowing your search from there, depending on which factors are most important to you.

For me, I would probable push the clarity grade to be at least a VVS2. That narrows it down to 26 diamonds, and looking at them in a results list I see only one is a “H” color and an “ideal” cut. I’d probably buy that one ($3,128).
