Eternity Knot

The Celtic tattoo design is multi-faceted. It can be in the form of a cross. It can also be in the design of a knot. These knots can be round, triangular, square or just about any other shape desired. But what makes it a Celtic design? We are going to explore this very popular and unusual tattoo design and discover the meaning (if any ) behind them.

When referring to a Celtic knot, one generally assumes that the design of the knot is such that the cord comprising the knot is endless. That is, there is no end or beginning to the form. This is truly what sets this knot apart from any other type of knot. The meaning of this can be interpreted to include eternity, infinity, omniscience, omnipotence or omnipresence. In other words, no end in time, space, knowledge, power etc.

When inking this design as a tattoo, many people use these meanings to convey their spirituality, ambitions, dreams, and goals. There are some differences in the actual knots (as mentioned above).

The 3 cornered Celtic knot or Trinity Celtic Knot is probably the most simple design. In it’s purest form it consists of only three curved lines connected at the three corners. It can be drawn with more complexity by interweaving other knots into the pattern. This Celtic knot design is most widely accepted as a mystical or religious symbol. Christianity would refer to the 3 corners as The Father, Son and Holy Ghost or Spirit. In pagan beliefs it may mean Mother, Crone and Maiden.

The 4 cornered Celtic knot is called a quaternary knot. This design is more complicated and can be drawn with many intricacies. As with most all Celtic knot designs the meaning can be a family heritage or crest. It may also be a symbol of good luck (is in the four leaf clover). Some beliefs say the 4 corners represent the elements, earth, fire, water and air. Other meanings for the 4 corners are… the 4 directions, the 4 books of the Gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) or even the 4 seasons.

The Celtic round knot is a takeoff of the trinity knot. More complex, this design actually has the basic trinity knot inside of the design. The meaning behind this knot can mean earth, fire and water.

All Celtic knot designs can be inked to fit into a particular shape as well. Many times you will see a stone cross, tombstone, doorway or other marker with the Celtic knot design drawn inside the boundaries of it’s perimeter. The integrity of the knot design still holds – It will be one continuous line from the start to finish.

I must mention that you may see Celtic knots with a combination of designs. There might be circles incorporated into the trinity design, for example. Maybe there will be two designs together. If you are considering using a Celtic knot design for your tattoo, take some time to design artwork that means something to you. There are few rules and, with a little effort, you will come up with a tattoo you can be proud of.

I wish you the best in your selection of a great tattoo design.

A poem I wrote on impulse?

Feel free to criticise…

Jagged thorns, they coil,
In rugged knots around my soul,
Choking the very life that I wish to lead,
An endless distortion of harmony.

I pierce myself upon an alter,
Roaring at the eternity of night,
That the gods might grant their mercy,
And hear my solemn plight.

For life is a harsh mistress,
And people are remnants of memories long past.

I’m thinking of extending this and changing a few things, so it’s by no means finished.

For a poem written on impulse, it’s not bad! The imagery is graphic and intriguing. It is a little unclear, as some have pointed out. It might need a little clarification – but… It evokes and graphically expresses emotion – desperation, depression, disunion, confusion – and that is what poetry is all about.

I agree that it needs a little work, perhaps, but not much (for example, one can’t “hear” a “plight.” You might consider “know my solemn plight”).

I also am not a big fan of non-traditional poetry, at least not from most amateurs. They are taught that “poetry doesn’t have to rhyme” (true) and it doesn’t need meter (sometimes true), so there is a lot of really, really bad poetry being written today (IMHO). Many people think that if they write prose (not necessarily good prose) and throw in a few random line-breaks, that it becomes a poem – and that is one of my pet peeves.

BUT – it is true that sometimes a poem does not have to rhyme, perhaps is even enhanced by the lack of rhyme, and that meter is subjective. Your poem is a good example of that. Well done…
