In recent years, tall bar-style seating has grown in popularity as a new way to dine. Regular patio tables are fine for just an average, sit-down meal, but the long bar tables is modern and versatile. Use your tables with matching stools for appetizers and drinks, or nix the chairs and use your table for other purposes. Whatever you think to use it for, a long bar table brings excitement and elegance to the backyard. Here are just a few of the ways you can use one in your patio area.
Have dinner on it
The long bar table is good for eating on. You can enjoy dinner outdoors, brunch al fresco or lunch on the go on one of these tables. Bar tables sit a few inches higher than regular tables, and usually work in conjunction with tall, bar-style seating. The seats themselves can either look like barstools or low-backed seats with extra long limbs. Often times, these chairs will swivel for ease of movement.
Overall, the feeling of a long bar table is more upscale, modern and elite than a regular dining table. This is the kind of table you’d see, not just as a bar, but at a quaint bistro or swank lounge. Most of the tables, depending on how long and wide they are, can sit anywhere from 4 to 10 people on average. One thing to think about is that since they aren’t as wide, you won’t be able to cram as many plates on the table as you once could, but with all the space you’ll save from having a narrower table, you can bring in extra serving trays.
Have a self serve dinner or potluck
Due to its irregular shape, the long bar table is ideal as a buffet style table. It’s wide enough to hold many dishes, but skinny enough so that people can fit around each side as they grab food. At the same time, because it’s higher, people will have an easier time picking out what they like without bending or reaching over. They also look a million times nicer than plastic folding tables. Most outdoor long bar tables are constructed from great-looking, strong woods that will hold up under stress but will also be so attractive you won’t want to cover it up with a tablecloth.
Play bartender
The shape of the long bar table is also perfect for serving up and displaying drinks. You can keep wine bottles and buckets displayed in a row for at-home tasting, or line glasses up for wine flights. If you’re not a fan of wine, then try the same thing with a beer tasting. You can also turn your long bar table into, well, a bar. The height of the table is great for people working on their feet, so your inner mixologist can conveniently mix, shake and serve up highballs without stooping to grab the ingredients. You can fit everything you need in a nice line along the table, from glassware, to garnishes, ice and more.
Keep your plants
If you get a little more creative, you will realize that your long bar table can do more than just serve food and drink. They look perfectly nice as stands for your deck pots and planter boxes. Plus, they’re strong enough to hold the weight of soil and withstand weather exposure. You can even pair them with tables and benches of different heights to display your plants at all different heights.
Owing to its original shape and dimensions, the long bar table has more options to offer than a regular height table. And though it’s not the best choice for large sit-down dinner parties, the options for what you can use them for go on and on.

Where can I buy extra long tent stakes for beach camping?
Some friends and I are camping at on the beach this summer. Every guide I’ve read about beach camping says that we must get extra long stakes because of the sand. I’m having a hard time finding these – does anyone know a good store to buy them at, or what terminology I should use to search for them online?

You need curved or v section pegs, not the straight rod type unless they are very long ….and then you find a rock buried eight inches down just where you’re knocking the peg in. Beaches do that deliberate..
If you can find some pegs with a saw-tooth edge, even better.
You can get thick plastic ones like that or straight-edged, quite cheaply, or wide alloy pegs fairly cheap or stainless steel, even titanium…very expensive for those..
Wide pegs can be shorter than thin ones and then you get still more grip in the sand without having to go very deep.
Another trick is to put heavy rocks over the pegs. Bang or push the pegs right in to the sand so they’re flush,and use big hopefully flattish rocks so they don’t tip or roll, to put some weight on them. Same on snow. Pile some rocks over the pegs and build a bank of snow along the sides and back of the tent for better stability. Some tents have snow valances for doing that…very handy.
You can also use boulders to tie onto, scooping sand out from the base to get low. Sometimes handy for one peg at least to get a good fix in one corner and use the boulder for shelter or privacy. Put the cord through the peg loop and right round the boulder, then tighten up and tie it off. Put the sand over again and you’ve got a low fixing without using a peg.
Of course sands vary like soils vary. On the west coast of Denmark we drove a convoy of big Army trucks right along the beach for twenty miles on the hard sand ….as good as a road.
Even cycling on it on holiday later was a dream….not hard going at all..
Normal pegs were fine in it too.
