How many lbs of hand feed should I buy to last an 11 week old blue & gold macaw?
Hello there,
I am purchasing an 11 week old blue & gold macaw. Should I buy the 10 lb or 20 lb bag of hand feed? Should I buy her a brooder as well? Also, they said I should keep her in more of an aquarium type been until she’s a little older. How old till she should be strong enough for a cage? Any help or advice is very appreciated.

You should NOT be purchasing a baby parrot that hasn’t been weaned UNLESS you are extremely experienced. Not ‘I read instructions’ or ‘they told me what to do’…experience as in a vet, breeder or other type of thing.
Weaning parrots and caring for them while they are young is a difficult and dangerous process that needs a lot of time, effort and patience. What happens during weaning and handfeeding impacts and shapes a parrot mentally and physically for the rest of their lives–in a macaw’s case 60 years or MORE. This could, if it goes wrong, mean stunting, ill health, poor development, permanent emotional traumal, serious behavioural issues and DEATH. ONE wrong move on your part and that baby bird suffers the consequence and it is highly likely that the bird will fall ill or die. Lots of baby parrots fed by inexperienced people do.
PLEASE PLEASE leave the parrot with the breeder.
It is a myth that parrots who are handfed by a person bond ‘better’ etc with that person—they switch and build bonds with anyone.
Also—do your research on parrots—not easy companions at all.
