Many women are scared to wear night gowns during the coldest months of the year because they believe that they’ll freeze all night long. This doesn’t have to be true; you just have to wear the right nightgowns at the proper time, and supplement your comfort with seasonally-appropriate accessories.
The first thing to remember is that the sheer nightgowns you love to wear all summer long are probably not the same nightgowns that will get you through the winter. This seems like it should be obvious, but it bears reminding. Unless you live in a tropical climate, the skimpy little chemises that you love to wear in May are not going to be very comfortable in December or January. These coldest months are the time to break out flannel, wool, and other warm, thick fabrics that might be too hot six months from now.
The best ladies sleepwear styles to get you through the winter months are those that are long, thick, and don’t let a lot of heat escape from the collar or wrists. Many long-sleeved winter nightgowns have elastic wrist cuffs and a high neck that is either elastic, or closed with ribbons. Long nightgowns are able to invisibly accommodate leggings or long-john pajamas beneath; for maximum invisibility, choose a legging shade that is very close to your natural skin tone.
On very cold nights, consider wearing a cap or hat to bed. The human body can lose a great deal of heat through the head; a knit cap can really help you stay warm and snuggly all night long. Such a cap can easily be knitted in an hour or two by anyone who is comfortable with basic knitting techniques; they are also available for sale almost everywhere during the winter, and are not expensive at all. Another important nighttime accessory are thick, fuzzy socks. If you don’t want to knit your own, don’t fear; you can purchase them almost everywhere. Some are made of wool, while others are a nifty microfiber fabric that has shea butter infused directly into the fabric. These usually cost about five dollars a pair, and the shea butter persists through repeated washings.
Long nightgowns may be supplemented by a matching or coordinating robe. Flannel, terrycloth, and wool are all excellent; the warmest womens robes are lined, or crafted from a double layer of material. Make sure than any and all flannel nightgowns/ robes that you buy have been treated with a flame retardant; the same applies to all other synthetic materials, which will melt if they catch fire.
When giving winter nightgowns or robes as gifts, consider augmenting your gift by including a matching sleep cap, fuzzy socks, or pair of slippers. Many department stores sell similar sets already boxed and ready to go, but you may be able to save some money by assembling the set yourself. If you can, include some holiday-scented sachets in the box so that everything will smell fantastic out of the box. Great scents to consider are apple mint, evergreen, apple cider, or a cinnamon/ clove spice mixture.

Why are all wedding dresses strapless gowns?
If you google images for ‘wedding gown’ you will see basically the same style dress. Doesn’t a bride want to wear what looks best on her, instead of a ‘uniform’? Certainly strapless gowns are not for everyone. Are the designers lacking creativity?
Ahhh….the wedding uniform of the early 2000s! It would seem that is all that’s available, but if you dig a little, there are other designs.
