Natural Emerald
Emeralds? Dyed or heat treated, or misnamed? Help please!?
I’ve bought a selection of emerald rondelles that have been confirmed by the gemstone supplier to be natural emeralds with inclusions. They are within my price range (small at 4mm x 3mm rondelles), and are a dark to medium green colour with black (or very, very dark blue) occasional streaks and other inclusions through them.
However, I’ve just run them through some Beadsmith gemstone cleaner, and they turned the cleaning solution a pale green… I am planning to take them to a pro gemologist friend of my parents, but in the meantime what you do all think? Are they dyed emeralds, or a set of a completely different dyed gemstone?
The green coloration of the solution clearly indicates dye, as you note (heat or radiation treatment could change the color of the stone, but the color couldn’t leach out). They could be low-grade green beryls that have been dyed to make them more attractive, or could be quartz or something else. Beryl is harder than quartz, but they’re pretty close, so it might be hard to get a definitive answer through a hardness test.
