The theme of my wedding is “a southern affair”. what should we do to incorporate this theme into our day?
I don’t by any means want to have a “gone with the wind wedding” with huge petticoat dresses…but I do want traditional southern foods….my venue is a very old school house from the 1860′s that is now a lovely museum. What foods should we serve…what ideas do you have for invitations, etc. please help me with this as I am planning my own wedding.

Unfortunately for the health conscious, Southern cuisine tends to be very heavy and includes a lot of fried dishes or dishes with lots of fat. However, you can avoid some of that if you serve a lot of fresh vegtables. If you are planning on doing an entire meal, you should consider doing rustic dishes or foods apropriate to the location. (if you are near water, a low-country boil is a great meal idea, as opposed to being in the middle of Georiga, where fried chicken might be the dish of choice).
There is also the option of a potluck of family favorites, which is very Southern, regardless of the menu. In my Southern family, we almost never have an event catered because we all cook as a family to provide for special occasions. A big deal for weddings is the dessert table. Outside of the cake, we will often have several Southern pastries and sweets, which might include divinity candy, certain cookies, and pecan pie.
If you serve alcohol, mint juleps are nice cocktails, and bourbon and whiskey are favored over most other liquors. Iced sweet tea really is the best choice for drinks in general, as well as plain water and lemonade. There should be some sort of punch served with the dessert table. And coffee should be kept on hand
As for clothing options, though you may not be having petticoats and such, you can still wear a few Southern accessories. You might consider having the women in the wedding party wear gloves (and hats, if it floats your boat) in recognition of the Southern roots of the event.
When you and your husband leave afterward, you should have rice thrown. Bubbles and bird seed simply do not suffice. (And don’t worry about the birds, the rice does not acctually kill them at all; that is just an old wives’ tale.)
