how do i set white balance on my nikon d40?
do i have to face the camera onto a white surface before i set to auto? or can i just set to a white balance mode without having to point the camera to any surface?
p.s. also how do i preset white balance custom settings?
when you are using auto white balance you do not have to do anything. If you are selecting a existing white balance setting on the D40, press the menu button and then select the shooting menu ( camera icon) Use the multiselelctor to navagate to white balance scroll to the white balance setting you want and hit he Ok button
To use the pre custom white blanace you do need a white or grey card. Set teh white card in the same light you will be shooting in , set the focus to manual and set the distance to inifnity press the menu bitton , the shooting menu ( camera gain ) scroll to white balance select PRE ;select hightlight measure from the two selection on the menu , you will be asked if you want to overwrite existing data choose yes; In a few seconds the shooting menu will come up with a dialog box that says “Take picture of a white or grey object filling the viewfinder under the light for shoooting” Point it at the target making sure you are not casting your shadow on the target; press the shutter relase, you should get a ‘data aquired” message and the letter GD in the viewfinder display you are now white balanced for that light
If you get the “unable to measure preset whitebalance ” message and No GD in the viewfinder open the aperature to let in more light and go though whitebalancing again.
You can set the function button to do this if its something you will do often ( and I recommend it ) in menu CS11
