silver jewelry???
my sterling silver pendants have just started to turn black thats because they say 925thai but my other jewelry that say 925italy arent and ive also been cleaning both of them with silver jewelry cleaner maybe its cause of that or is the silver better in italy or what
Sterling silver oxidizes–it is the metal alloyed with silver to strengthen it that is reacting to the air around it. Oxidation (tarnish) is normal for sterling and can be cleaned with silver cleaner. Storing your jewelry in air-tight containers when you are not wearing it will also slow down the rate of oxidation–I keep my pieces in zip-lock bags with a piece of anti-tarnish material.
The silver pieces marked with “Italy” are not showing the effects of tarnishing because of what is known as the “Italian Finish.” Italy customarily plates its silver pieces with rhodium–a member of the platinum family that will not oxidize/tarnish. This rhodium plating has prevented any exposure of the sterling silver to the air, thereby reducing/eliminating oxidation/tarnishing.
The plus of the “Italian Finish” is obviously the control of the tarnishing.
The negatives of the “Italian Finish” include the impermanent nature of plating. The Rhodium plating will wear off in time, exposing the silver and allowing oxidation/tarnishing to take place. The pieces can be replated by a jeweler periodically–the process is relatively easy, quick, and inexpensive.
Another negative is the reduced shine of the piece. Silver is more reflective of light than the members of the platinum family (such as Rhodium) and also more reflective than gold. The ability to reflect light so wonderfully is one of the reasons that silver is so popular with the jewelry industry.
Just a quick word of warning. . . Many manufacturers/makers of jewelry in Mexico sought a less expensive way to offer an anti-tarnish finish to their jewelry when the “Italian Finish” became popular. In place of rhodium, many Mexican manufacturers began to use a less expensive plating that contained nickel. If you have any tendencies toward metal allergies, you want to be careful with Mexican silver.
