Where can my fiance get a reasonably priced engagement ring? Please help experienced men!?
We are in college and need to save money for our future, but he is determined to get me a decent solitaire ring. He has been looking at Kay jewelers, but I didn’t know if there was a better place that would be all over the world to purchase a ring. I’m scared that online stuff would be disappointing and unreliable.
I used to work Kay Jewelers, and employees receive a generous discount upon hiring. It’s one of the nice benefits of working there. What’s even nicer is that you receive the discount even if you are part time! If he has some free time on weekends, maybe he could work at Kays (or Shaws, or Jareds – same chain) and could pick a ring from their inventory for your, place it on lay-a-way and pay for it gradually then use the discount as well. He could take his time paying for it, and pay less overall. Also, if the manager is cool, you could work at Kays (and get a nice discount for things for yourself) and he could use your discount to buy your ring. My husband did, and our staff kept it a secret from me the whole time! I even tried on the ring, thinking it was for someone else (my coworkers mom)!
Anyway, the only downfall in doing this is that you do not qualify for the extra insurance the store offers (at an extra cost, though) that could cover the rings repairs in the future.
It’s what my husband and I ended up doing, and I have the nicest ring in my office! (I ended up with a 1.15 carat round w/ a .75 carat round stone wrap – almost 2 carats total!)
(Also, we were engaged in college, and married one year afterwards – we were in a similar situation to you.)
Good luck to you and your guy, I wish you the best!
