Plumbing Stack Seperates?
My main DVW stack has seperated at the expansion joint twice now in two weeks – despite being firmly secured. The expansion joint gets forced down – as if under pressure and seperates spilling sewage all over the floor.
The joint (a rubber ring and hose clamps) was tight before it happened both times.
The plumbing works fine otherwise and there is no room for the stack to have shifted.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Actually waste plumbing should never have an “expansion joint”. What you have is a rubber “fernco” temporary repair coupling. Not designed for pressure applications such as yours. You have a blockage down stream resulting in back pressure which is taking the least path of resistance, going around the repair coupling. You could add more “hose clamps” or tighten the ones you have – possibly stripping them (still not fixing the problem though). Your best bet is to have hard pipe installed at the coupling. If you have a septic system, I’d check the tank level for overfilling and the drain field or the connecting pipe for possible damage/collapse. If connected to the public sewer you may have root blockage, a collapse or an accumulated waste blockage which needs augered out and inspected with a camera. Either way you have a situation which will only get worse until it is corrected.
