People have been fascinated with mermaids for as long as there have been people. The idea of someone being half fish and half human has led to countless stories about people falling in lover with mermaids (and their male counterparts mermen) being told to generations of children.
But recently, with the advent of Disney movies like The Little Mermaid, which is itself an adaption of a Hans Christian Andersen story, the mermaid Halloween costume has become one of the most popular costumes for little girls ever.
You can, of course, find adult versions of the mermaid costume, but in general these are way more appropriate for adult Halloween parties rather than for your little girls school fall festival parade.
Adult mermaid costumes are made up of a long gown resembling a fish tail, like Daryl Hannah wore in Splash, usually in green fabric made to look like scales. And on top, either a halter top or bikini top designed to be sparkly and iridescent. Or sometimes if the atmosphere of the Halloween party is very open, just the bottom gown part is worn with nothing on top. But that is strictly for adults.
Little girls love to dress up like the Disney Princess Ariel. Her costume is also made up of a gown like lower portion which looks like fish scales and a T-shirt type top set off with a necklace of seaweed. And because she is a princess, your little one will definitely need a nice looking tiara, perhaps dazzling with seashells or even better little glittery rhinestones.
The gowns of these costumes are not really dresses, but instead from the appearance of a gown while really being shorts or pants with a mermaid draping down the back. That really is the only downside to this kind of costume that someone could step on your little girl’s mermaid tail. It won’t hurt but it might come loose and that would mean a bit of repair if she wears it to school and then again out for trick or treating.
This is a costume which does not need a mask to be complete. This is a good thing because way too often the mask gets lost somewhere along the way between home and school or out on the Halloween trail. But what does look great with the mermaid costume is a nice wig of long flowing hair. Perhaps set off with a crown, tiara or just a simple starfish barrette.
