Titanium Band

Coke vs. Pepsi. Mac vs. PC. Star Wars vs. Star Trek. Now a new rivalry can be added to the list: Tungsten vs. Titanium. It’s the latest debate in men’s wedding bands and jewelry. But what are the sides all about in this war? Well perhaps my personal experience with both can guide you.
For starters, I have never been too much of a ring guy. In fact, I never really wore much of any jewelry. I had a class ring that was nice, but as with most class rings (and championship rings), it was way too large to wear on a regular basis. Fast forward to a couple of months before my wedding day, and I was having to choose a wedding band that epitomized my feelings and life-long commitment to my soon-to-be wife. I had researched a couple of options: silver, white gold (not a yellow gold kind of guy), and titanium. Of the three, titanium was cost effective, and, oh let’s get to the point, “cool.” It was a different kind of wedding band metal, something I hadn’t seen many other guys choosing.
When I chose my titanium band, the first thing I noticed was how light it was. I never felt it on my hand. Unfortunately, on the first day of my honeymoon I noticed them. Scratches. They were all over the nice looking brushed surface. My wedding band was looking abused! And on the first full day of wearing it! I tried to hide the scratches by rubbing and polishing it, to no avail. I even had a friend that was a jeweler polish it, and although it shone brightly, I still noticed all the little scuff marks on my titanium ring. And here’s something I didn’t realize, by choosing a different type of ring, titanium, plenty of people wanted to look at it. I honestly felt embarrassed to show my wedding band. I told myself that the scuffs didn’t matter, and that I wouldn’t notice anymore. I even convinced myself that the scuffs would eventually cover the entire surface, and make it look smooth and even again on the surface.
But as time passed, I discovered a newer metal used in mens wedding bands tungsten carbide. I looked into it, and spoke with experts to learn all I could about this relatively new material. The first thing that caught my attention: no scratching. Ever. I couldn’t believe it. I had heard the same about titanium rings when I first looked into them, and look where that got me. What I also noticed was how similar in color tungsten carbide and titanium were. In fact, tungsten carbide had a more industrial gray to it that really attracted me to it. It stood out amongst the crowd. And the style selection! Tungsten carbide could be fashioned into so many interesting designs. Faceted cuts on the surfaces allowed the tungsten to really shine. Not to mention the inlaid gold, silver, and platinum options. And of course tungsten carbide could be beveled and matted, like my titanium ring.
But I was still skeptical about the scratch resistance. I was able to test this out on a couple of different surfaces. I tried a file, asphalt, and good ol’ banging around. Nothing phased the shine and surface of the tungsten carbide ring. I felt like I had found the biggest secret in jewelry! On top of that, I was surprised by the weight. Tungsten carbide is a dense alloy, giving it its hardness and scratch resistance. But alas, the ring was very similar in weight class to my titanium band.
With the blessing of my wife, I have made my decision in the tungsten carbide versus titanium debate. In my mind, there is no debate. Tungsten carbide offers the beauty and uniqueness of a metal like titanium, but with the strength, hardness, and durability unlike anything else. I look forward to showing off my wedding band, and spreading the knowledge of such a wonderful material. Above all, I feel like my wedding band exemplifies my wedding vows, a value I cannot put a price on.
I bought a “titanium” Ring from Walmart for $60.00, Inside the band it says ” Tungsten Fc” ?
Does this mean its not Real Titanium? Thanks!
The FC has to do with how hard the metal is. Meaning it can stand up to heat and pounding. With a ring, one assumes you’re not going to beat it up. LOL But if you did, that ring would be tough to beat.
