Vvs Round

First, let me give Sri Lanka some good news. Sehwag will not play any more part in this tournament. As far as ODIs are concerned, India is virtually a one man batting outfit, and that man is Sehwag, who bats without care as to who the bowler is or what the pitch is doing. If there’s any reason for complaint against Sehwag it is that he throws away his wicket when set.
But when you look at Sehwag’s average in tests (mid 50s) or ODIs (plus 40), you would wonder at such complaints.
Now it’s time to give you my 5 reasons why Sri Lanka cannot hope to beat India:
Inexperienced Bowling:
The Kulasekharas, Welegederas and Tusharas don’t hold any threat for the strong Indian batting, with or without Sehwag. There was a time in his early career when the Indian batsmen struggled against Mendis. But in the last year or more, they have figured him out.
Inconsistent Sri Lankan Batting:
The problems for Sri Lanka start at the top of the order. The opening slot has been a merry-go-round in recent times. Although Dilshan appears to be settling down, the experimentation at the other end has hurt the Lankans. Jayasuriya’s prolonged stay in the team hasn’t helped, either. On paper, the middle order appears formidable with Jayawardene and Sangakara, followed by Matthew and Kapugedera. But the early dismissal odf Sanga and Jaya more often than not triggers panic. Matthew is a great find, but one man cannot bail out a team in every emergency.
Depth of Indian batting:
The Indian batting runs deep, with Harbhajan and Zaheer capable of doing winning turns. A batsman like Raina, when in form, relishes any bowling other than express speed, a quality that’s absent in the Lankan bowling. So expect the Sri Lankan bowlers to be taken to the cleaners on all but the most helpful wickets.
The Zaheer-Bhajji Factor:
This pair has been bolstering the Indian bowling in the last few years. Since his return from injury, Zaheer has been a threat to opposition batsmen with his ability to bowl in the corridor of uncertainty. Bhajji’s penchant for taking wickets at crucial times has turned many matches on their head.
The Dhoni Factor:
Call it the Kismat Factor, but Dhoni and victory go together more often than do Dhoni and defeat.
But before I finish, let me remind India that Lanka are playing on their home ground and will enjoy 100% crowd support. But Dhoni doesn’t reminding, surely…
