Pearls are different from diamonds, emeralds or rubies; these types of stones are measured by size, clarity and color, and are harvested from the ground; then they are measured and studied to determine the most convenient way to cut them. You can get a nice set of pearls by paying attention to several major factors. The first one is the luster or shine of the pearl. A good pearl is shiny and is scratch free. A pearl that is dull does not have enough layers of nacre on it.
Nacre quality is the second factor which determines the quality of a pearl. Nacre is the material that pearls are made from. Sometimes a pebble or other foreign material gets into the mussel’s shell and irritates it. The mussel releases nacre and starts to form the pearl around this object to protect itself from the irritation and that is how the pearl forms.
A good pearl is not simply white or black or pink, if you look closely at it; you can see a rainbow of colors. The changes in light produce yellows and greens and even blues all over the pearl surface. Close attention must be paid to the surface of the pearl, when a person can see different color on it; this means its nacre content is high and it is a mature pearl.
The shape of the pearl is also extremely important; a well cultivated pearl is round to the eye. When they say round to the eye it means it looks round with the bare eyes not with an instrument to measure the circumference. Since freshwater pearls are made naturally by a living being, it is almost impossible for them to be perfectly round. A good pearl must not have any scratches or bumps on the surface either; it should be smooth and soft to the touch.
Now, when your intent is to purchase a necklace or bracelet another set of factors must be taken into account. All the pearls in the set must go together well, or be graduated in a way that makes sense. Some freeform designs take advantage of the unique nature of pearls, so slight variances only add to the look of the finished piece.
Pearls are very delicate and must receive special care. They must be washed after each use with a mild soap and dried softly with a cloth. Body acidity and other chemicals like perfumes and creams may affect the luster and nacre surface of the pearls, perfume must be applied a few minutes before the necklace or bracelet is put on. They must never be stored with other jewelry, especially metallic jewelry; the nacre surface is easily scratched and damaged.
Excessive heat will also damage the luster and continuous exposure to it may even crack the pearls and damage them permanently. Pearls are best stored in a soft pouch by themselves in a place where they receive some air and ventilation. They must never be stored wet and must never enter in contact with abrasive detergents or chemicals.
It is also recommended that the string be changed once a year. The string should also be knotted in between each pearl to avoid them scratching or damaging each other with movement or while storing them. Freshwater pearls are beautiful and affordable. A string of pearls will remain beautiful forever cared for properly.
