White Black

Black and white photography is alive and well and thriving in the midst of a world of colour. No matter what your niche in the photographic world you should make room for black and white in your portfolio. The fist photographs to be considered art were of course all black and white, which is probably why many people think of this medium when they think of photographic art. Achieving a timeless look is partly why many top photographers continue to work in monochrome. Black and white allows the photographer as artist to reveal a world sometimes flitted over by the naked eye, subtleties of texture, light and shade often overpowered by colour. Colour can at times actually detract from a desired photographic effect.
There’s often an air of romance in a black and white photograph, a timelessness and an element of mystery, which is why you still see top companies using black and white in their advertising. A picture stripped bare of the distraction of colour has a unique power and rawness and black and white photographs have a quality that’s hard to define. With today’s digital cameras, converting your images to monochrome is a dawdle in any version of PhotoShop and most other image processing software. You can go to Image, then mode, and switch to greyscale; but remember that when you do this, all the colour information is gone from the image The other way is Image, then adjustments and desaturate. This also makes the image black and white but retains the colour information in case you want to introduce colour to any part of your black and white picture through the use of the ‘History Brush’. This can be effective and is often used by advertising agencies to highlight a product.
If you wish to add a little ‘Glow’ to your images you could experiment with the following. Open a black and white image in PhotoShop. Make a duplicate, (go to Layer, then duplicate layer). Then to filter, blur, and gausian blur and set the radius to about nine. Then go to Edit and Fade Gausian blur. Reduce the opacity to 80% and in the drop down box where it says Normal, select lighten. Now you may want to pick out some details that have become effected by the blur. There are a couple of ways to do this, but in this example lets use the eraser tool. Go to your eraser tool and a soft round brush of nine pixels, choose the size that suits your purposes and with a brush strength of about 70% you can bring back the detail you want from the original layer. You can now go to Layer, and Flatten Image. Now you should have a new image that appears to glow. This can be very effective with portraits and smooth away wrinkles, but always make sure to reveal the eyes from your original as pin sharp focus here is vital. You can easily enhance this further by simply going to, Image, Adjustments, and use your brightness and contrast sliders.
Enjoy your photography
I’ve been a professional photographer for more than thirty years and my work has been published globally through agencies such as Rex of London. In the early eighties I studied photojournalism at New York University under National Geographic photographer Tom Morotta, which was a wonderful learning experience I treasure to this day. I’ve travelled extensively in Europe, the US and the Caribbean and lived in Southern Spain where I worked for top society magazines on the Costa del Sol. I presently live in Belfast in Northern Ireland. http://jlynn2.com
Why do in US a child born between white and black partners is considered as Black?
I really struggle with that because when you mix
White + White = White
Black + Black = Black
White + Black = Black (in the US)
What is the history behind? Why something obviously wrong not to acknowledge that there is biracial is accepted.
Please someone help me understand that so I can get over it. I have a biracial child and HATE when people says she is black. She is neither black nor white. She is mixte (biracial).
Thank you for any help
.
Actually — the assumption that you have
made about the US is inaccurate — as,
the ‘One Drop Rule’ no longer exists.
By the way, the ‘One-Drop’ Rule (the false teaching
that ‘any amount’ of Black ancestral lineage make a
person “full Black”) is nothing more than pure-racism.
The racist ‘One-Drop Rule’ (used only by the
United States government, by the way) was
created during the antebellum/chattel-slavery
era by White-supremacists in order to get
people to believe the false racist myth that
the so-called White “race” was “pure” and
tp falsely see the Black “racial” admixture
(even the slightest amount) in a person’s
ancestral lineage as being “tainted”.
To embrace the ‘One-Drop Rule’ is
the equivalent of BOTH embracing
“racism” and also embracing the
false teaching that a Mixed-Race
person’s Black lineage is “tainted”.
My advice is that a non-Racist should *not*
embrace the concept of the ‘One-Drop Rule’
– as “Black blood” is *not* “tainted” — and
should never be perceived or embraced
as being so (not even in the name
of so-called “pride” and “unity”).
In addition, legally-speaking, attempted forcible
application of the racist ‘One-Drop Rule’ — against
any individual or group — was made illegal and ruled
as unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court
in 1967 via the case of ‘Loving vs. The State of Virginia’.
Through the ‘Loving vs. Virginia’ case, the U.S.
Supreme Court, ruled against both all of the laws
banning Interracial marriage — and — also ruled
that any so-called law which forcibly applied the
‘One Drop Rule’ — was racist, discriminatory,
illegal, unconstitutional, and non-enforcible.
